RESEMBLANCE

Opening Tuesday 26th February, 6:30pm
At Lincoln Performing Arts Centre
Open Until 29th March

Emma Locke’s work is rooted in manipulated portraiture. The history of her imagery can be found in extensive research over recent years into facial similarities and resemblance. The underlying concepts to these final photographs are concerned with ideas of the self and the complexity of identity, both genetically and through growing similarity in facial features. This is to discover whether relationships can subtly mould the way we look. Locke explores this concept by merging the faces of genetic relations, as well as couples who have spent their lives together. This explores our own perception of identity and resemblance, questioning if we can ‘grow’ increasingly similar to another person. The photographs also address issues surrounding the current cultural obsession with youth and beauty from a social perspective. Photography and sensitive editing techniques have been used to question the general assumptions made about a photographic portrait.

Film Screening: The British Guide to Showing Off

Film screening Saturday 26th January, 2pm

Usher Art Gallery, The Collection

British artist and living legend Andrew Logan, loved the world over by celebrities and misfits alike, takes us under his glittering wing and inside his outrageous, anarchic and spectacular costume pageant: the Alternative Miss World Show. As the Shows master of ceremonies and ringmaster, Logan is the high priest of an esteemed congregation. He describes the Show as his most important artwork; a fabulous living sculpture that spans forty years of arts and culture. Using live observational camera, archive and exuberant animation, this documentary charts the mounting of the 2009 Show, interwoven with its history, the rise, fall and rediscovery, of both the event and the artist at its center.

EXPANSE

An exhibition organised by The Collective at Zing Cafe, Lincoln Performing Arts Centre.

Opening Friday 18th January, 6:30pm

Laws of physics; atmospheric variables; biological engineering and the deterioration of organs: our ability to perceive is limited by a great many factors. On average, when stood on a flat expanse, a human with perfect vision has the ability to see for a maximum of 3 miles. The result is a snapshot of the world around us.

However, what may be limited by physics and biology can be expanded by the human mind. We are able to perceive the world in ways far beyond the physical. This allows us to produce works of art portraying, probing and questioning our environment in infinitesimal ways.

This show brings together three artists who choose not to be restricted by the physical. They work in a wider realm of perception, questioning our awareness of the world and challenging the way the viewer perceives. The artists, Dean Mooney, Mateus Domingos and Josie Clouting, each work in different ways to explore how we view landscape or to use landscape in exploring a narrative. Though each artist works with different media, together they show us that ‘landscape’ is much more than the limited view before us.

The Collective have chosen to bring together three talented, emerging artists for our first exhibition in the Zing Café. This exhibition hopes to create a dialogue between these contrasting pieces, inspire discussions around the subject of landscape and contemporary art, and spark interest in local and emerging artists.
